Healthy Salad Dressing
Healthy Salad Dressing
One of the worst things you can put on your food is most of the salad dressings that are available from shops.
You see most of them contain canola oil (which is NOT a healthy oil, despite advertisements) and corn syrup. These two ingredients will both make you fat and are also unhealthy.
Don’t take my word for it, do your own research but when you find out how they make canola oil, you’ll be put off for life. Let me just say that one of the chemical stages of making canola oil is to run it through a refreshing wash, of bleach. Yes, bleach!
A great alternative to canola oil is olive oil for salads and shallow frying. When you compare the production of olive oil to canola oil, you will understand they are a world apart. Olive oil is made by squeezing the olives and heating it slightly to separate the sediment. And extra virgin olive oil is even better, they just squeeze out the oil and that’s it.
So do you want oil simply squeezed from the very healthy olive or do you want something which is run through multiple chemical processes (because you can’t eat the original ingredient), including bleach?
You can use coconut oil (yes, that supposedly unhealthy oil) for deep frying. Again, please don’t take me word for it. Do you own research.
Anyway, you can use this really healthy salad dressing which is also delicious.
Step 1
Start by adding the following ingredients;
- 1/2 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1/2 cup of Balsamic vinegar
- A very small helping of honey
- Pinch of salt and pepper
Mix it together and taste. If it tastes too sour, add more extra virgin olive oil. If you need more sour, add more balsamic vinegar.
If you really have to, add more honey but remember that even though honey does have some great health benefits, it is still basically sugar.
Step 2
Once you have the balance right, you can add some spices to make it unique. I normally add a little bit of garlic powder and sesame seeds.
You can also add finely chopped onion with paprika powder for a bit more depth.
Shake it together and taste again.
Then finally season it again with salt and pepper until it tastes right.
This will give you a really healthy and tasty salad dressing which you can use for most salads. Plus once you’ve made it a couple of times, you can start to experiment at Step 2 stage by changing the ingredients that you add.
Remember to experiment carefully by adding only small amounts as you can ruin a salad dressing by changing things too much.
I know this seems like a lot to take in but once you have made it a couple of times, you will be able to make this really quickly. Another bonus is it will save you a lot of money as well.
